API 5L Pipes

API 5L defines the manufacture of two product levels (PSL1 and PSL2) of seamless and welded steel pipe for the utilization of a pipeline in the transit of petroleum and natural gas. For material use in a sour maintenance application, refer to Annex H; for offshore services application, refer to Annex J of API 5L 45th Edition.

Knowledge of the planned end use and desired method of pipe fabrication is a compulsory prerequisite for nominating the relevant material specification, pipe grade, individual requirement (ASTM), API 5L product specification level (PSL), API 5L Annex Requirement, or CSA Z245.1 category or service group. An API 5L Pipes is manufactured by adhering to the specifications laid down by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3183. It assigns the standards for the materials, gear, and seaward constructions for petrochemical, petrol, and flammable gas enterprises.

Under this specification, the grades covered are A25, A, B. The following “X” grades are also covered: X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, X80. The two digits following “X” signify the Minimum Yield Strength of the pipe that has been produced in this grade.

Other Details:

Surface
1. All surfaces have been 100% visually inspected. The surface condition complies with API 5L standards.
2. External surface of the pipe shall be coated with a layer of varnish.

NDT
All pipes will be ultrasonic tested on pipe body and pipe end as per API 5L standards:
1. longitudinal: 100% of the pipe surface
2. pipe ends not scanned by the automatic ultrasonic system shall be inspected by manual UT or Magnetic Particle Examination.

Certification and Traceability
All dimensions will be supplied with a 3.2 certificate according to EN 10204, endorsed by a recognized and independent inspection agency. Marking shall be in SI units (X52) in accordance with API requirements & mill standard.

Dimensional Control
All dimensions will be supplied according to API 5L clause 9.11; In addition, the following tolerances apply:
1. Pipe body: +/- 0,75%
2. Pipe end: +/- 0,5%
3. Wall thickness: +15%, -12,5%
4. Length: -0 / +100mm

Pipe Ends

Pipe Ends are beveled. The end angle shall be 30°- 0°/+5°, the root face shall be 1.6mm +/- 0.8mm,// and fitted with bevel protectors.

Protection

Pipes are varnished on the outside.
